Wilma Jo Ferguson was born on January 5th, 1934 in Douglass, TX to J.D. and Ethel Ferguson. She passed from this life on Wednesday, May 17, 2017 at Desert Springs Nursing/Rehabilitation at the age of 83 after a short illness.
She attended school in Douglass, TX and graduated from Douglass High School in 1952. She then attended college at Stephen F. Austin State University in Nacogdoches, TX earning her bachelor’s degree in teaching. She taught school for one year in Odessa, TX before moving to Hobbs, NM in 1957 where she continued her career as a teacher. She met and married Dr. Bill D. Lee on November 27th, 1957 in Hobbs, NM and taught in Floyd and Clovis while her husband was in college at ENMU in Portales, NM. In August of 1965 they adopted a son, Jeffrey A. Lee and became valued educators in Hobbs. Wilma earned her Masters in Education from ENMU in Portales. Wilma and Bill divorced in 1977 and she later married Dan D. Wilson on March 6th, 1980. She taught Language Arts and English at all three of Hobbs’ Junior High schools (Houston, Highland and Heizer) until she retired in 1991. She touched the lives of literally thousands of students, teaching the fundamentals of reading, writing and grammar. She was proud of her 34 years as an educator and rarely could leave the house without a young adult saying, “Mrs. Lee” or “Mrs. Wilson” do you remember…..? While known as an educator, her first calling was to minister to people and tell them about her Lord and Savior. She was active in First Christian Church and lifted her voice in praise each Sunday. She loved God’s gifts of nature and enjoyed bird hunting, fishing, and long drives in the country.
She was preceded in death by her parents; J.D. and Ethel Ferguson, one brother Jerry Lynn Ferguson, two nephews; Terry Wayne Ferguson and Terry Allen Ferguson, her first husband Dr. Bill D. Lee and her second husband Dan D. Wilson. She is survived by her sister; Dorothy Warren, her brother Ted R. Ferguson and his wife Claudia Sue, son Jeff A. Lee, her daughter in all but blood; Kathleen Gallaway, her step-son Gary Dan Wilson and his wife Dana, step-daughter Jana Sebastain and her husband Tom, five grandchildren, several great-grandchildren and many nephews, nieces, cousins and friends.
Mrs. Wilson was one of my 7th grade teachers. I even have a newspaper clipping of her and I. We are praying for her family.
