OBITUARIES

Corine Hicks
July 31, 1902 - March 11, 2009

After over 106 years of a glorious life, Corine went to be with her Lord and Saviour Wednesday, March 11, 2009.  She passed away peacefully at Hobbs Health Care Center. Corine was born July 31,1902, near Frost, Texas. As a young girl, she worked the cotton fields.

In her twenties, she met and married Hubert Hicks whom everyone called "Dude." Early 1953 they moved to Hobbs where Dude had other brothers. In March she went to work for Gen and J. O. Smith as a Nanny and Housekeeper for their three-year old Identical Twin Boys.

She helped raise them and. instilled in them her beliefs of taking care of others with compassion and deep faith, which her "Boys" which she called them all of her life, continue to do so with  their patients and friends, as Doctors. As the twins grew, she, continued to work, and in her spare time worked as a floral designer at the Smith's flower shop. She loved to garden and was a quilter, hand stitching every quilt, which many have today to cherish. .

Though Corine was very independent and lived alone after her husband's death in 1982, the.Smith and Zespy family continued to guide her and take care of her every need. They considered her a member of their family, as she did.  She worked part time until the early 1980s. In 2005 she moved to Hobbs Health Care where everyone who came in

contact with her loved her smile and sweetness. You could always count on a smile. Never in her over 106 years did we ever hear a complaint or an unkind word - A Lesson for Us All.

Corine used to say, "I DON'T KNOW WHY THE LORD HAS LEFT ME HERE SO LONG, BUT HE MUST HAVE A REASON."

Funeral services of a celebration of her life will be Monday, March 16, at 2:00 p.m. with a viewing from 9:30 - 11:30 a.m.at the Chapel of Hope Funeral Home and from 1:00 p.m. to service time at the Lane Chapel Church,  1201 E. Skelly.  Reverend Russell Hill, VistaCare Hospice Chaplain, will officiate with Reverend Larron Fields assisting.  Burial will be at Everglade Cemetery in the family plot.

Smith and Eddie Zespy.  She is survived by a half brother, Evan Thomas of Houston, Texas; her husband's great-grandson, Frankie Hicks and wife Gwen and family of Dallas, Texas; Dr. Tom Smith of Edmonds, Washington, Dr. Tim Smith of Bothell, Washington, and Jo Anne Zespy, her devoted caregiver for many years; Special Friends, Mayolo Peoples, Lemma White, Helen Davis, Jessie Higgins, Marva Erwin, Brenda Lowe, Miguel Gutierrez and Mae Clay.

We are so grateful to Hobbs Health Care for the love and care they gave her and VistaCare Hospice for their brief but dedicated assistance.  Corine lived her life by God's plan for her and the Golden Rule: "TREAT OTHERS AS YOU WISH TO BE TREATED."  She was a blessing to all who were fortunate enough to have her in  their lives.
