Benjamin Louis Thorp Jr., 101, passed away Feb. 6, 2008. He was born Dec. 25, 1906, in Knickerbocker, Texas, to Benjamin Louis and Lula Thorp.
At age 6 months, he was brought by a covered wagon with his family to homestead in what was then Eddy County. He passed on at the place he had lived on for over 100 years south of Hobbs.
He is surshy;vived by his wife of 68 years, Gladys Cureton Thorp; two sons, Ron of Casa Grande, Ariz., and Louis Ray of Carlsbad; grandchildren, Casey Thorp of Oracle, Ariz., Brandon Thorp of Phoenix, Jamie Thorp of Casa Grande, Benjamin Louis Thorp III of Corpus Christi, Josh Thorp of Hobbs and Jacob Thorp of Charlottesville, Va., and nieces, Lola Ben Dunnam Lawson of Amarillo, Texas, and Etolia Hill Scantling of Stockton, Calif.
Louis was a veteran of the U.S. Army, having served at Schofield Barracks, Hawaii. He retired from Amoco Oil and Gas after 30 years, and then farmed for the remainder of his life. A strong, good man, Louis Thorp will be greatly missed by his family.
Mr. Thorp will be in state Sunday 1-6 p.m. and Monday 8 a.m.-2:30 p.m. at Chapel of Hope Funeral Home. A funeral servshy;ice will be at 3 p.m. Monday at Chapel of Hope. Burial will folshy;low at Prairie Haven Cemetery.
