Carl Hensley, age 76, passed away peacefully at home in Hobbs, New Mexico, on May 24, 2025. Born in Hugo, Oklahoma, Carl led a life filled with service, love, laughter, and generosity.
Carl proudly served in the United States Marine Corps during the Vietnam War in 1967. Following his military service, he built a career as a dedicated sandblaster and painter in the oil field industry. Known for his strong work ethic and kind heart, Carl touched the lives of everyone he met.
A man of many passions, Carl found joy in farming, fishing, and watching Westerns. He was a proud coin collector and a spirited volunteer, especially in rabbit organizations. He helped his grandson establish the Southwest Regional Rabbit Breeders Association and was honored with the Distinguished Member Award for his commitment. He was also a Quilt of Valor recipient in recognition of his service. Carl once served as a deacon in Artesia for Pastor JB Craft and was a devoted Girl Scout and Brownie leader to ensure his daughters could take part in the troops.
Carl's warmth was matched by his wit and charisma. His contagious laugh and radiant smile filled every room, making it impossible not to laugh along with him. He loved his family deeply-expressing it through generous gifts, heartfelt conversations over coffee, and his unique hobby of "bucket hunting" for garden containers. His love for his dogs, Bandit and Mitzy, was unmatched; he often joked that Bandit was named after Burt Reynolds from Smokey and the Bandit because the little dog loved to show off just like the actor.
Among Carl's cherished stories was the memory of proposing to his wife, Shirley-right in the middle of a street in Artesia while the two rode their bicycles. That same spirit of spontaneity and love carried through their life together.
Carl is survived by his beloved wife Shirley Hensley; his daughter Valerie D. Hernandez; his brothers Jimmy R. Hensley and Waymon M. "Butch" Hensley; his grandchildren Christopher (Samantha) Hernandez, Ashly (Sidney) Hernandez, Zachary (Skyler) Starrett, and Jasmine Hernandez; and great-grandchildren Zaylen, Cheyenne, and Aarinna Hernandez. He is also remembered fondly by his two loyal dogs, Bandit and Mitzy.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Loraine Rose and Mathew Hensley, and his daughter, Betty "Lori" Weber.
Carl's legacy of love, laughter, and service will continue to inspire all who knew him. Funeral or memorial service details will be shared by the family when available.
