Charlene L. Gray Obituary

Born October 20, 1928 in Amarillo, Texas to Troy L. Davis and Edna Putman Davis. Charlene went to be with our Lord on November 24, 2020

Charlene married Fred J. Gray on December 2, 1947 in Amarillo, Texas. They were married for sixty-three years until his passing May of 2011.

She graduated from Amarillo High School in 1947 after attending High School in both Hobbs High School and Yakima, Washington High, there was a lot of moving during her school age years.

Fred and Charlene moved to Hobbs after they were married. Charlene worked at Franklins Dress Shop and G.F. Wackers before her employment for thirty-six years with the City of Hobbs Water Department, twenty-one years as the Water Department Manager. She (Broke a lot of glass ceilings during that time) retired from the City of Hobbs in 1991. In June of 1992 she became the Church Secretary for Jefferson Street Church of Christ working in that position for eight years. Charlene was an active member of Jefferson Street Church of Christ.

Charlene is survived by her sister Norma Mounts and her husband Duane of Perryton, Texas, two sons; Wilburn R. (Will) Gray and wife Anita of The Woodlands, Texas, Joe H. Gray, and wife Debbie (deceased) of Hobbs, New Mexico, grandchildren; Lisa, Chris, Angela, Ashley, Cassandra, and Michael, great-grandchildren; Kaylie, Austin, Cristian, Logan, Arron, Ethan and Marysa. Two nieces Cindy and Judy Mounts (maiden names), the Roger Gray family, Karen Garner, Patricia Jackson, and the Larry Smith family and a great, great, great, grandson Ash Burkhardt.

Charlene’s family was the delight of her life, her hobbies were the sewing of her own clothes, both oil and watercolor painting and family hunting and camping trips with Fred and the Boy’s.

She was preceded in death in death by her parents Troy and Edna Davis, paternal grandparents William and Artie Davis, maternal grandmother Nolia Putman, grandson Wesley Gray, numerous Aunts, Uncles, and cousins.

Interment will be at Prairie Haven Cemetery next to the love of her life and best friend Fred J. Gray.

In leu of flowers Charlene asks that contributions be made to the New Mexico Christian Children’s Home, 1356 NM Hwy 236, Portales, NM  88130.
