Charlie Denver Shaw, 88, passed from this life Sunday, December 2nd at Lea Regional Hospital in Hobbs, NM.
He was born to parents Denver C. and Annie Shaw in Hempstead, Texas on May 26, 1924. By 1926 the family had moved to the West Texas farmlands near ODonnell, Texas where a younger brother, William O. Bill Shaw was added.
By 1936 the family migrated to Hobbs where Denver, along with his brother, Oscar Shaw, opened and operated Shaws Machine Shop until the beginning of World War II.
Charlie graduated from Hobbs High School in 1943 and enlisted in the U.S. Navy. He spent three years in the South Pacific with the 57th NCBs. He was operating a ditching machine on a hill on the island of Manus when the battleship USS Mt. Hood exploded clearing the decks of some fifty other naval ships gathered in the harbor there for a naval invasion.
The war over, he returned to Hobbs in 1946 and reopened Shaws Machine Shop with his uncle, Oscar Shaw, and later his brother Bill.
On February 14, 1947 he married LaVerne Burk at Taylor Street Church of Christ. They became parents of two sons, Lynn Carlton Shaw and Lane Kendall Shaw making a total of three generations of Shaw brothers on one block, Denver and Oscar, Charlie and Bill, and Lynn and Lane..
In 1967 Charlie sold the machine shop to Watson Manufacturing Company and went into the world of real estate. He became brokerowner of Hobbs Realty until his retirement in 1986.
Charlie and LaVerne enjoyed traveling to all fifty states, to Canada, to the British Isles, Europe, the Caribbean, Venezuela, the Panama Canal, Mexico, Australia and New Zealand. They enjoyed RVing with friends until ill health kept them at home.
Charlie is survived by his wife, LaVerne, of the home, two sons, Lynn C. Shaw of Hobbs and Lane K. Shaw of Lubbock, Texas two granddaughters, Courtney Huizar of Belmont, California and Erin Buck of Austin, Texas two greatgrandsons Zane Reda and Corbin Buck and a stepgreatgranddaughter, Kayla Buck, all of Austin, Texas a brother William O. Bill Shaw of Hobbs and a double cousin Mrs. Nancy Ritz of Midland, Texas. He was predeceased by a son, Loren Eric Shaw, a grandson, Ryan Carlton Shaw and a special cousin, Melvin R. Shaw, all of Hobbs.
A memorial service will be held Wednesday, December 5th at 11:00 a.m. at the Chapel of Hope with interment in Memory Gardens, Hobbs, NM.
