Edgar Hawkins

August 16, 1935 — April 26, 2020

Hobbs

Edgar (Eddie) Hawkins, 84, beloved Father, Grandfather, and Great-grandfather, was called to his eternal resting place on April 26, 2020. He entered this world on August 16, 1935 in Drumright, OK, born to William (Edd) and Martha Hawkins.  Eddie moved to Hobbs, New Mexico in 1951 and attended Hobbs High School.  He was a pitcher of the HHS baseball team and pitched a no hitter while in school.  He was one of the first graduates at the current location of Hobbs High School in 1953.   During his high school days, Eddie met his wife of 64 years, Bettie Jo, (BJ) at a square dance.  They married in 1954 and settled in Hobbs where they raised their two children, John Jeffery Hawkins of Odessa, TX and Julie Ann (Hawkins) Fry of Parker, CO.  In 1955, he began a long career spanning 40 years with Phillips Petroleum working in various roles and ultimately retiring as Transportation Manager in 1995.

Eddie was a true renaissance man. He was a student of American history and was an amateur archeologist with a love of western and Native American artifacts and antiques. He was also an avid spur and gun collector. He loved rodeos, raising and racing horses, drag racing, riding motorcycles and Oklahoma State football. He had a passion for the outdoors and took great pleasure in camping, hunting and fishing.  However, he derived his greatest pleasure from his family, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Eddie was a feisty spirit with a big heart.  He enjoyed inserting a quick-witted comment into a conversation that made everyone laugh.

Eddie is preceded in death by his parents, Edd and Martha Hawkins of Hobbs; sisters, Louise Blackburn and Elizabeth Bejeck of Oklahoma; brothers, Floyd Hawkins and Bobby Hawkins of Hobbs and Lendell Hawkins of Artesia.  He is survived by his wife, Bettie (BJ) Hawkins; son John Hawkins of Odessa, TX and Julie (Hawkins) Fry of Parker, CO; a sister, Linda Ball of Hobbs; five grandchildren and four great grandchildren.Memorial services are pending and will be published at a later date.
