Edwina Stevens, 86, of Hobbs, New Mexico passed away peacefully in her sleep on April 5, 2022. She was born at home on September 27, 1935 to Willie and Ed Stevens in Nolan County, Texas and grew up in the area around Sweetwater.

Edwina earned her GED at New Mexico Junior College where she was encouraged by staff to work towards her dream of becoming a teacher. She vigorously pursued that dream and graduated from New Mexico Junior College with an Associate in Arts degree on May 14, 1976. She continued her education at Eastern New Mexico University where she graduated cum laude with her bachelor’s degree in Education on May 12, 1977 and with her Master of Education degree on July 31, 1981.

Edwina began her teaching career in Carlsbad, New Mexico shortly after receiving her bachelor’s degree.  Most of her teaching career was spent with the students at Puckett Elementary in Carlsbad.

Upon retirement, Edwina became a docent for the Living Desert Zoo and Gardens State Park in Carlsbad, where she volunteered for several years. She moved to Hobbs, New Mexico in the summer of 2006 to be closer to family.

Edwina is survived by her daughters Beverly Sutton and Kathy Henderson Jolly; her granddaughters Heather Ray and Stacey Wynn; her great grandchildren Alyssa, Julian, Cameron and Jace Barreraz, Rebecca and Aidan Jackson, and Alex Wynn; and sister Georgianna Roe.
