Fred Lawson

December 8, 1941 — January 4, 2018

Fred Lawson, 76, was born December 8, 1941, to James and Flora Lawson in Middlesboro, Kentucky. He died peacefully in his sleep on January 4, 2018, in Midlothian, Texas.

Fred came to New Mexico by way of the United States Air Force in 1960, where he was stationed at Cannon Air Force Base, near Clovis, New Mexico. Shortly thereafter he met Lydia Romo in Portales, New Mexico. They married on May, 5 1962. Fred started Fred's Auto Repair and continued to build, service, and race cars until a near fatal collision cost him his left leg in December of 1964. Following the loss of his leg, he enrolled in a series of electronic programs through Eastern New Mexico University. Upon completion of the programs he went to work for Zearl T. Young at Western Auto in Hobbs for many years. He then started Satellite Service Company where he worked until his retirement.

Fred was passionate about his children, cars, hunting, playing poker, and gospel music. He leaves behind many long-time friends. His survivors include beloved wife of over 55 years, Lydia, and his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Son, James Lawson of Hobbs, New Mexico, and his children, Lydia and Zachary. Daughter, Rhonda Lawson Thomas, her husband Mike, and their four children, Michael, Matthew, Madeline, and Meredith, of Midlothian, Texas. Daughter, Donna Lawson, and grandsons Joshua and Tristan, of Plano, Texas. Granddaughter Nikki Stinson, her husband Justin, and three beautiful great-grandchildren all of Hobbs, New Mexico. Also, treasured nephew, Randy Lawson of Hobbs. Fred was preceded in death by his mother, father, and sister and tragically in April 2017, his son Gary Duane Lawson, of Hobbs.

Fred's desire was to be cremated and have some of his ashes spread across his favorite hunting grounds. The remainder of his ashes will be laid to rest next to his son Gary, at Prairie Haven Memorial Park Cemetery.
