Gary Lee Jones

December 31, 1949 — August 29, 2025

Hobbs

On December 31, 1949, in Clovis, New Mexico, a boy named Gary Lee Jones was born into a family stitched together by love, including his parents, June and Herschel Jones, his sisters, Terry and Rhonda and his brother, Allen. From the very beginning, Gary carried the quiet light of God that revealed itself through service, kindness and seeing the good in everyone. In Las Cruces, while studying at New Mexico State University, he met Donna, the love of his life. Together, they built a home in Hobbs, raising three children, Curtis, Casey and Derek. His children were his joy, his song and the light of his life. Later came his five grandchildren, Mick, Jai, Brady, Benton, and Tatum. Each child and grandchild was a blessing multiplied, each one a prayer answered. Gary was a dedicated and successful businessman. From 1991 to 2023, he owned and operated Basin Surveys, a surveying company that served his community and oilfield with the same honesty, diligence and integrity that marked his life. He poured his heart into his work, creating a thriving business and relationships built on trust and respect. Gary believed in God with a strength as steady as the sunrise. His faith gave shape to his days, guiding him to live with humility, generosity and grace. He served through the Special Olympics, the Lions Club and the Hobbs Drug Coalition. Gary was a giver. Whether someone needed a job, a shirt, a smile or a helping hand, he gave from his heart without hesitation. Not out of duty but because it was his nature to love . . . and love he did. He loved fishing trips with his brother, Allen. He loved the laughter of his sisters Rhonda and Terry, even when it came wrapped in teasing. He loved playing with his grandchildren. He loved the closeness of family . . . the simple meals, the gatherings and the warmth of being surrounded. Always, above all, he loved God, who was as present to him as breath itself. Gary leaves behind his beloved wife, Donna; their children Curtis and his wife Emily, Casey McVay and her husband Michael, and Derek and his wife Brittanie; his grandchildren Mick and Jai McVay, Brady, Benton, and Tatum Jones; his siblings Terry, Rhonda and Allen; and many others whose lives are brighter because of him. He joins in eternal rest his parents, June and Herschel Jonesand his beautiful niece, Jessie Rind. To remember Gary is to remember what it means to live faithfully: to serve, to love without hesitation and to walk gently but with strength. He had a good life. Now, his spirit, like a bird, has taken wing, carried home by God.
