Gilbert Granger, Sr.

February 4, 1938 — April 2, 2019

Gilbert S. Granger, Sr., age 81, of Hobbs passed away peacefully from this life on April 2, 2019, at Covenant Medical Center in Lubbock, TX.

Gilbert was born to Joseph, Sr. and Asencion Granger on February 4, 1938, in Carlsbad, New Mexico.

A successful business owner, Gilbert spent a lifetime pouring concrete in New Mexico and Texas where his name quickly became synonymous with outstanding concrete work. Specializing in standing up curb and gutter by hand, he often outworked and outpaced his much younger employees. Gilbert was a man of his word, and his handshake was his oath. He worked tirelessly to provide a quality product and to fulfill his promise.

His love for his children fueled his unparalleled work ethic, determination, and drive. Gilbert was an incredibly loving and devoted father who lavished upon his children all he had to give. Having endured many hardships, Gilbert was determined his children would not suffer the way he had, and he worked endless hours to ensure they each received the college education he wished he had been able to pursue. Of all of his many accomplishments, none compare to the pride and joy he felt for his children and grandchildren. His family was his world and the motivating force in his life.

Having never forgotten his humble beginnings, Gilbert is also remembered for his remarkable generosity. Many friends, relatives, individuals, and organizations benefited from his generous nature throughout his lifetime. An intensely private and humble man, he gave with no strings attached and never sought recognition.

He is survived by nine children, Ruth Gonzales and husband Genaro, Jr. of Hobbs, Stanley Granger of Hobbs, Randy Granger of Las Cruces, Crystal Navarrette of Hobbs, Bernadette Granger of Hobbs, Dr. Jeremy Granger and wife Sandy of Sioux City, IA, Sara Granger and husband Jimmy Rodriguez, Veronica Granger of Hobbs, and Amanda Nauert of Lubbock, TX; 18 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren; sister Alice Quiroz and husband Manuel of Lovington, NM; brothers Joe Granger, Jr. of Carlsbad, NM and Adam Granger, Sr. and wife Evelyn of Lubbock, TX; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents, paternal and maternal grandparents, brothers Tom Granger, Sr., Henry Granger, Sr. and Michael Granger, Sr., and his son Gilbert "Junie" Granger, Jr., as well as numerous extended family members.

In observance with his wishes, no funeral will be held. Memorial contributions can be made to Habitat for Humanity of Hobbs or St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.
