Hazel Bernice (Truby) Ternes, known as Judy by her family and friends passed away November 8th after suffering a stroke at the age of 96. She was a long-time former resident of Hobbs and was living in Longmont, CO at the time of her death. She was born August 6th, 1925 in Gallina, New Mexico to Dave and Reda Truby. She was the youngest of eleven children. She was preceded in death by her parents and all of her siblings. Judy was also preceded in death by her husband John Ternes, and eldest daughter Terri (Ternes) Morris. She is survived by her two other children, Alex Ternes of Albuquerque, NM, and Sylvia Layh of Boulder, CO. She is also survived by her four granddaughters, Angela Layh of Lafayette, CO, Lisa Perreault of Aurora, CO, Melissa Melton of Hereford, England, and Amy Johnston of Albuquerque, NM. Judy also has six great grandchildren.
Judy grew up on a ranch near Aztec, NM and at the age of 18 she moved to Los Angeles, CA where she worked at Paramount studios. She met her husband there when he was on leave from the Marine Corp during WWll. They only knew each other for three days before he was shipped overseas and agreed to write each other while he completed his 2 year tour. Upon his return to Los Angeles, they took a bus to Las Vegas, NV and married on August 14th, 1946. They were happily married for 48 years until John's passing in 1994.
Judy was a friend to everyone she met. Her greatest joy in life was her family and friends. In her younger years she loved to bowl, dance, and ride horses. In her later years she enjoyed reading, playing cards, and traveling. Judy is deeply loved by her family and all that knew her. She was simply put, Pure of Heart.
