alignjustifyMemorial services will be held 1 p.m. Thursday, April 2, 2009, at Northside Baptist Church conducted by Dr. Richard Cheatham assisted by Pastor Brad Reimers and Rev. Russell Hill. Cremation will take place.
alignjustifyJames was born in Fulton, Missouri, on March 25,1917, and was raised in Vian, Oklahoma. He had two brothers and one sister. During World War II, he served in the Army, 2nd Infantry Division, 702 Ordnance Co., which landed at Omaha Beach in Normandy. After the war in 1948, he moved to Hobbs to work for Tidewater Oil Company. He retired after 33 years. He continued to serve his country in the Army Reserves and National Guard for 29 years where he retired as a Master Sergeant E8.
alignjustifyHe was saved at a young age in Vian, Oklahoma, and was a deacon in Baptist churches in Oklahoma and Hobbs. He married Pat Murphy June 5, 1970, in Roswell, N.M. He was a member of Northside Baptist Church for 36 years, where he served the Lord as a men's Sunday school teacher. He also was a helpmate to his wife as they served the Wednesday night meals and other numerous functions. After James retired, he took up woodworking and had a booth at an antique store where he sold many of his works of art. He was always making things for his grandchildren whom he loved dearly.,
P alignjustify Survivors include his wife, Pat; his sons, Bill Murphy and wife Vicky, Mike Athey and wife Teri, Bobby Athey and wife Tammy, Kenny and wife April; his daughters, Juan Nell Cheatham and husband Richard and Judy Gray and daughter-in-law Karen Murphy. He was Papaw, Grandpa or Poppa to 12 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.
alignjustifyJames' parents, Emmett and Elva Mae Murphy; a brother, Orville Murphy; a son, Jimmy Murphy; a grandson, Jason; and two granddaughters, Teresa and Sabra Jay preceded him in death.
alignjustifyFuneral arrangements are under the direction of Chapel of Hope funeral home.
alignjustifyThere will be a reception following the service at Northside Baptist Church in the fellowship hall.
