Obituary

Marvin “Joe” Brown, 78, of Hobbs, New Mexico, passed away peacefully on July 2, 2026, surrounded by the love of his family. Joe was born on January 12, 1948, in Lamesa, Texas, to Walter and Betty Brown. He grew up with a strong work ethic and deep family values that remained the foundation of his life. He graduated from Andrews High School before marrying the love of his life, Sheryl Scheller, on October 7, 1972. For more than 53 years, they built a life together filled with love, laughter, unwavering devotion, and a deep commitment to their family.

Joe is survived by his beloved wife, Sheryl Brown, of the home; his daughters, Elizabeth Brown of Hobbs and Mhaegan Wilson and husband, Skye Wilson, of Hobbs; his two treasured grandsons, Cason and Clayton Wilson, who were the pride and joy of his life; his brother-in-law, Ernest Scheller; his sister-in-law, Judy Shearer of Hobbs; and many beloved nieces, nephews, extended family members, and dear friends who will forever cherish his memory.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Walter and Betty Brown; his younger sister, Patsy Turnbow; and his brother-in-law, Paul Turnbow.

Joe had a gift for woodworking and found great satisfaction in creating with his hands. He was an avid fan of motorsports, especially drag racing and NASCAR, and could always be found cheering on his favorite drivers. He was also a lifelong John Deere enthusiast and admired everything the iconic green and yellow brand represented. One of Joe’s greatest influences was John Wayne. He admired “The Duke” not only for the characters he portrayed, but for the values he represented. Joe lived his life by what he considered John Wayne’s code—keeping his word, working hard, treating others with respect, standing up for what was right, and putting faith and family above all else. Those principles were reflected in the way he lived every day, and, in the example, he set for those who knew and loved him. Above all else, Joe was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather. Nothing brought him greater joy than supporting Cason and Clayton in all of their activities. Whether it was attending ball games, school events, or simply spending time together, his family was always his greatest pride.

He will be remembered for his quiet strength, gentle smile, dependable nature, and the unconditional love he gave so freely. The family would like to express their heartfelt gratitude to the compassionate caregivers at Desert Springs and Star Hospice for the exceptional care, kindness, and comfort they provided to Joe and his family during his final days.

Joe leaves behind a legacy of integrity, humility, loyalty, and unconditional love for his family. His life was defined not by what he accumulated, but by the people he loved, the values he lived by, and the example he set. He will be deeply missed, fondly remembered, and forever loved by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
