Jose "Papa Joe" Vasquez was born on October 21, 1947 in Ropesville, Texas to Hijino and Juanita Vasquez. He married Mary Helen on November 20, 1968 and had three beautiful children; Bernadette (Charlie Ortega), Dominic Vasquez, both of Hobbs and Fredrica (Jose Flores) of Manhattan, Kansas. He was blessed with 9 grandchildren, and 11 great-grandchildren.
He was known to all as "Papa Joe". He was a member of the Knights of Columbus where he was a 3rd degree and 4th degree member, he also served as a youth director, church director and family director and was in charge of the free throw contest for many years.
Papa Joe was a Boy Scout leader for Troop #350 for 14 years. He was the manager for men's baseball and softball and a coach pitch team, The Lil Falcons. He was inducted into the USSSA Hall of Fame in 2012. He served as an Eucharistic minister at St. Helena and Our Lady of Guadalupe churches. Papa supported his family as a welder for 48 years.
Papa was selected as the Cinco de Mayo Hispanic of the Year and the Jaycees Family of the Year.
