Kay Dee Shumate was born to Richard and Betty Shumate on June 21, 1948, in Clovis N.M. She grew up in Portales NM where she graduated high school. She married the father of her two boys, the oldest of which was born at Cannon Air Force Base. The U.S. Navy transferred them to California, where her youngest son was born. Kay lived in Albuquerque and Las Cruces, but Portales was home. She moved back to Portales in 1990. She was reunited with her sons soon after, both were in the military. She went back to school at ENMU and got her bachelor's in accounting. She put that to good use working for the city of Portales in the finance office, until she retired. After retirement she moved to Hobbs NM to be close to her youngest son and his family.

Kay lived a quiet retirement in her home until the last several months. She passed as quietly as she lived, with her youngest at her side.

Kay Shumate passed on Monday June 15, 2025, into her eternal life, looking forward to hugging her daddy and Grandpa again in heaven.

She is survived by her oldest son Alvin (Art) Plexico and wife Cindy of Arlington Tennessee; youngest son, Bubba Plexico and wife Taffery of Seminole Tx; good friend Frances Gilland of Hobbs; granddaughters Shiloh Stovall (Keenan) and Savannah Nienhueser (Alex), both of Arlington Tennessee; grandson Blake Plexico (Shay) of Hobbs; bonus granddaughter Julia Gilland of Hobbs; great grandchildren Olivia, Sophia, Willow, James, Allisyn, Valerie and Trey.

At Mom's request, there will be no memorial service. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to The BeeHive (memory care facility) in Hobbs NM. Kay will be cremated and buried next to her grandfather K.D. Shumate.
