Sonny Downen, 91, of Hobbs, NM passed away on February 23,2026. He went to his heavenly home surrounded by the love of his family.
A proud veteran of the United States Army, Sonny served his country with honor and dedication. The values he carried from his military service: integrity, loyalty, and perseverance remained with him throughout life.
Following his time in the Army, Sonny devoted his entire career to working in the oil field industry as a rough neck, then truck driver for Moranco, Patterson and Star Tool. After retirement, he started his own Hotshot company – Sonny Trucking LLC. He was known as a hardworking and dependable man who never shied away from long hours or tough conditions. His strong work ethic and steady character earned him the respect of coworkers and friends alike. Providing for his family was one of his greatest points of pride.
Above all, Sonny was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather. He loved his family deeply and showed that love through his actions every day. Whether it was coaching his children’s sports teams, practicing in the yard after work, or cheering from the sidelines, he was always present and supportive. He taught his children not only how to play the game, but how to live with honesty, kindness, and determination.
He was an honest and caring man whose word could be trusted without question. He believed in doing what was right, even when it was difficult. His quiet strength, steady guidance, and generous heart left a lasting impression on everyone who knew him.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Kathy Downen of 35 years; his children, Dianna Yeley, Micheal Downen, Kevin Wright, Kami Randolph, KP Wright; his grandchildren, Amanda Berry, Halle Wright, Bret Wright, Korbi Randolph; and many extended family members and friends.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Mona Downen; son Stevie Downen; grandson Kutter Randolph; and son-in-law Monty Randolph.
His legacy of hard work, love, and integrity will live on in the lives of those he touched. He will be deeply missed and forever remembered.
