Lyndel Gene Mason, age 73, passed away peacefully on September 23, 2026, in Lubbock, Texas, following a brief illness.

Born on December 12, 1952, Gene was the middle child with big ears in a large and vibrant family, learning early to work hard and pray hard. As a young man, he jumped into the oil fields and bought a sharp white Mustang—a car he deftly used to win over the love of his life, Jody Page, with whom he started a family of his own. He weathered the oil bust, rig fires, and two wild daughters before retiring as a manager from Key Energy in Hobbs.

After retiring, Gene embraced his passions and lived life on his own terms. When he wasn’t on Facebook posting about politics and current events, Gene could be found watching the hummingbirds and tending to his “Poor Boy Farm,” strumming his guitar, or taking his black Harley out on long mountain roads. He liked his hair long, his hot rods red, and his music on vinyl.

Gene, who loved and was loved by so many, was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Jody Mason; his daughter, Robin Mason; his parents, Jessie James Mason, and Berniece Mason; and his sister, Caroll.

He is survived by his daughter, Brandi Mason, her wife, Kirsten Loomis, and his siblings, Janice Shepherd, Howard Mason, Rita Tyler, and Jerry Mason.

He also leaves behind a loving legacy in his grandchildren: Samantha Mason, Mason Beckett Loomis, Michael Etheridge, Matthew Johnson and his wife Dana (along with their daughters, Jinsen and Hattie), and KayLee Johnson and her husband Timothy Taylor (along with their daughters, Moriah, Emma, Trinity, RyLee, and Remi). They all think their PawPaw hung the moon.

And finally, he will be missed by his adored dogs, Drogo and Bud Mason, who Samantha promises to provide a lifetime of rotisserie chicken dinners.
