alignjustifyFuneral services for Murray C. Martin of Hobbs, New Mexico, will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, May 8, at Chapel of Hope Funeral Home under the direction of the funeral home.

alignjustifyMr. Martin, 84, passed away Saturday, April 25, 2009, at Graceville Estates in Chandler, Arizona, with his sister, Nita Haschets, formerly of Hobbs, and his niece and nephew, Connie and John White at his side.

Murray was born to Eula Lee and Andrew W. Martin in Mart, Texas, on June 7, 1924. He moved to Hobbs with his family on January 10, 1935, and attended Hobbs Schools. He was a member of First United Methodist Church.

alignjustifyAfter graduation from Hobbs High School in 1943, Murray joined the United States Army and was a member of the 491 Port Battalion stationed in Louisiana. He served in the Asian-Pacific Theatre in the New Guinea Campaign and received the Good Conduct Medal and the Victory Medal. Upon his discharge from the Army, Murray attended Hardin Simmons University in Abilene, Texas, and studied commercial art. Later he attended cosmetology school in Fort Worth, Texas, and New York City. He worked as a hairdresser in Texas, Florida and California and upon returning to Hobbs, Murray established Murrays for Beauty, a hair salon. He worked as a hairdresser for over 50 years.

alignjustifyMurray was a keeper of cats and strays, including people. He was generous and loved by all who met him and enjoyed his sarcastic humor and his tall tales. During his last months, everyone who came in contact with him commented on his huge smile and joking demeanor. He was much loved and will be eternally missed. Murray is survived by his sister, Nita Ruth Haschets of Sun Lakes, Arizona, his niece, Connie John White of Chandler, Arizona; his cousins, Sherwood Bea Carter of San Diego, California, Milton June Carter of Ruidoso, N.M., and Barbara Purdy of Bullhead City, Arizona, Wanda Brower of Texas, Deanna Huff of Oregon; his grand nieces, Amanda Nick Neilson of Colorado Springs, Colorado, Allison Derek Mangrum of Gilbert, Arizona, Cindy Dave Ganaway of Carlsbad, New Mexico, John Jennifer Haschets of Carlsbad, NM, Shelly Louis Rachal of Hobbs, Sissy Weeks of Hobbs, Mitchell Denise Bingham of Ft. Worth, Texas, and Shawn Linda Weeks of Ft. Worth, Texas; seven great-grand nephews; one great-grand niece; and numerous friends and cats, who he dearly loved.

alignjustifyMurray was preceded in death by his parents, Eula Lee and Andrew W. Martin; his older brother and sister-in-law, Marion and Beulah Martin; his nephew and niece, Rodney and Debbie Haschets; and a niece, Betty Bingham.

alignjustifyCremation has taken place. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions be sent to the Lea County Humane Society in Murray's name.
