Shyla Gaye McGill, born June 3, 1954 in Lincoln, Nebraska, died January 30, 2023 in her Hobbs, New Mexico home after a prolonged battle with cancer. She fought as she lived, with grit, passion, generosity and joy.
Shyla graduated from the University of Nebraska, Lincoln, earning a Bachelor's of Fine Arts and Master's of Arts. In pursuit of her chosen profession of teaching, Shyla lived and worked in Arcadia, NE; Louisville, KY; Chicago, IL; and finally Hobbs, NM. Shyla has been a Mathematics Professor at New Mexico Junior College for eighteen years and only recently retired on July 1, 2022.
Shyla's greatest joy was teaching, and she had a gift for making complicated mathematical concepts accessible to her students and the community. Her most satisfying accomplishment was establishing Pi Day at her College.
While living in Hobbs, Shyla enjoyed her favorite activities of teaching, art, bridge and spoiling her beloved German Shepard, Scout.
Shyla is survived by two sisters and their husbands, Suzanne and Micheal Short of Waverly NE, and Wanda and Jim Herstein of Louisville, CO, three Nieces, five Grand-nieces, and two Grand-nephews. She also leaves behind a multitude of dear and devoted friends, all of whom made her life more rich and complete. She will be deeply missed by all who loved her and her impact on our lives will never be forgotten.
