Funeral services for Tommy C. Jones, Jr. of Hobbs will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, December 5, at Ebenezer Baptist Church, 1222 E. Midwest. The Reverend B. G. Williams will officiate.
Visitation is 8 a.m. - 5 p.m. today Friday at Chapel of Hope Funeral Home.
Arrangements are under the direction of Chapel of Hope Funeral Home.
Mr. Jones, 59, died December, 1, 2009, at his home in Hobbs. He was born July 31, 1950, in Pittsburg, Texas. He married Patricia FiFie Jones on April 1, 1972, in Odessa, Texas. He attended Crane High School 1966-1969. He started on the varsity basketball team as a freshman and was the only sophomore in Texas chosen for the all-state team. He scored 65 points against Abilene High, set the record with most points in two games in the state tournament 91 points and averaged 43.3 points a game and 22 rebounds a game. He is still listed in the top 20 highest career points scored in Texas high school basketball history freshman year game scores omitted. He attended Howard Payne University, Brownwood, Texas, 1970 - 1974. He was a Small College TV Guide All American player, graduated with a B.S. degree in physical education and was inducted into the Texas High School Basketball Hall of Fame in 1994. He was a coach and referee for the Boys and Girls Club of Hobbs. He was a member of New Hope Baptist Church in Odessa.
Survivors include Patricia FiFie Jones of Hobbs; a daughter, Latoya Jones of Midland, Texas; one brother, Tommy James Jones of Odessa, Texas; two sisters, Betty Derrick and husband Earnest of Odessa, Texas and Ruby Helen Smith of Allen Texas; a grandson, Eric Ja'shon Sanders of Midland, Texas, and a longtime friend, Clarence Neal of Odessa, Texas.
Tommy was preceded in death by his parents, Tommy C. Sr. and Ruth Jones, and a daughter, Traci Lynette Jones.
