Vera Benford

December 14, 1948 — January 6, 2023

Hobbs

Vera Benford, 74, beloved Mother, Daughter, Grandmother, Aunt, Sister, and Mother-in-law, was called to her eternal resting place on January 6, 2023. She entered this world on December

14, 1948 in Hobbs, NM, born to Dozie and Loretha Slade.

She was educated in the Hobbs Public Schools and was a graduate of Hobbs High School.

At an early age, she united with the St. John Baptist Church where she served many years, faithfully along with her mother. Later she united with the Ebenezer Baptist Church under Rev. John Joiner where religious values served her as financial officer and in other departments as needed. She was there until her death.

Vera was a loving friend and devoted mother, who cared for her family and other members through many memorable moments. She had a carefree spirit. She was a great cook and was often found in the kitchen making a pot of “something” delicious or baking up a pound cake or making her prized sweet potato pies.

She loved children and she will always be known as one of the greatest “foster” moms in the county. Even until her death, she was aiding those who desired and needed her service.

Vera was also well known for being one of the first women to go into the oilfield, where she made many friends because of her hard work and tenaciousness. She had retired after many years of labor.

Leaving to cherish her beautiful memory: Her brother Gerald (Joe Ann) Slade of Hobbs, sister Lisa Slade of Arlington Tx., sister-in-law Debra Slade of Midland, Tx., uncle C.L. (Doris)Washington of Ft. Worth, Tx., and two aunts Betty (Ernest) Hooper of Houston, Tx. and Lois (Dennis) Donaldson of Tampa Fl., eldest son Rick (Melody) Jordan of El Paso, Tx., middle sonGregory (Adriane) Jordan Sr. of Killeen, Tx., youngest son Eric Benford of Hobbs; 7 grandchildren, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and foster children.

Meeting her at the banks of Jordan is her parents, Dozie Slade and Loretha Walker, a stepfather, Billie Walker; brothers Frank and Richard Slade; and daughter Karla Jordan.
