Obituary

Viola Montanez-Loving wife, beloved Mother of four children, Grandmother of six grandchildren, passed away on June 21, 2026, in Rankin, Texas.

Viola was born in Carlsbad, NM on August 14, 1949, to Remigio and Helen Morales. She was the oldest of fourteen children and was a graduate of Carlsbad High School. On April 12, 1969, Viola married the love of her life, Nilo Montanez, after he came home from the Vietnam War. They moved to Eunice, NM the same year.

After all her kids were in school she went to work at the bank, and then the Eunice Schools. She opened her own quilting shop in 1999 and was business until January of 2018. She was known as “The Quilt Lady” and made all kinds of quilts: NFL, School, T-Shirts, and Memory Quilts.

A deeply religious person, Viola believed Jesus Christ is our Lord and Savior and was a long-time member of St. Helena Catholic Church in Hobbs, NM. She was active in her church wit the ACTS Program, as a CCD teacher, and as a Eucharistic Minister.

She is survived by her husband of over 57 years, Nilo Montanez. Survivors also include her two daughters, Donna-husband Michael, Doreen-husband Paul, her two twin boys, Randall-wife Kathy, Ryan-wife Aurora, and six beautiful grandchildren who called her Mamo: Tiffany, Tyler, Linday, Branson, Christiana, and Noah.

Cremation and Memorial services are under the direction of Chapel of Hope Funeral Home, Hobbs, NM.
